What Is a Body Buff? Why Our Whipped Coffee Body Scrub Is Different
Share
If you've searched for "body buff" and wondered what it actually means, or why people call ours the best body scrub they've used, this post explains it: what a body buff is, how Melange Body Buff is made, and why it leaves skin soft instead of dry and tight.
What is a body buff?
"Buffing" means polishing. A body buff is a scrub that polishes away the dry, dead skin sitting on the surface, so the smoother skin underneath can show. People search for it in many ways: body buff, skin buff, buff skin, body polish, body scrub. They're all describing the same idea.
Melange Face & Body Buff is our version: a whipped, creamy coffee body scrub that exfoliates, cleanses and moisturises in one step. You can use it on your face and your body.
Why did we make it: "the scrub that hurt" gave Heena the idea to make it.
In Heena's words, founder of Melange Care:
"When I used a brand's body scrub a few years back, it made my skin so dry and the granules were so big that it hurt me while exfoliating. That is when I decided I'd make one. Every time I went to an exhibition, people would ask me if I had a body scrub. After trying, reading and researching for almost 6 months, I made Face & Body Buff: exfoliating, but equally soothing for skin, leaving it soft and smooth like we have used moisturiser on it."
That's the brief Body Buff was built on. It should exfoliate well without scratching, and it should leave moisturised skin behind, not strip it away.
What makes Body Buff different from other body scrubs
| A typical body scrub | Melange Body Buff | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Gritty paste or oily sugar mix | Whipped and creamy, melts on the skin |
| Scrubbing particles | Often large, sharp granules such as crushed shells or coarse salt | Sugar and finely ground coffee, hibiscus and others, softened by butters and oils |
| After you rinse | Skin can feel tight or dry, so you reach for lotion | Skin feels soft, "as if I had applied a layer of cream" (a customer's words) |
| Soap needed? | Usually yes | No. A mild cleanser is built in. |
| Face and body? | Body only, usually | Both |
| Freshness | Made in large factory batches | Made with freshly ground coffee every month |
Why the butters and oils matter: suitable for all skin types
Most scrubs are either all grit, which leaves skin dry, or grit swimming in oil, which leaves skin greasy. Body Buff is whipped. The butters and oils are blended with a plant-derived emulsifier and a mild cleanser, so they rinse off cleanly while leaving a light, nourishing layer behind.
- Avocado butter gives long-lasting softness.
- Coconut oil nourishes and helps protect the skin's barrier. In a 2014 clinical trial in the International Journal of Dermatology, coconut oil improved skin hydration in children with dry, eczema-prone skin.
- Apricot kernel oil is a light oil that softens rough areas like elbows, knees and heels.
- Candelilla wax, a plant wax, helps hold the moisture in and gives that silky after-feel.
Because the cleanser rinses away the excess, dry skin is left moisturised, oily skin isn't left greasy, and normal and combination skin is left comfortable. That balance is why Body Buff works across skin types, including sensitive skin, during pregnancy, and for kids above 5 years.
